MILAN, February 23, 2007 Donatella Versace was the first person to find a good name for the elusive chemical-bright turquoise that has shot through the best collections of Milan: She called it litmus-paper blue. Her use of it was spot-on, as was a startling red and a single bolt of sulfuric green, as well as chic contrasts of black, camel, and white. Is this the most important news to come out of Versace? Maybe: Bold color innovation combined with a pared-down, superprecise shape can make a collection jump this season. It cross-references with both Prada and Jil Sander. Perhaps this is becoming the twenty-first century's first run at making minimalism exciting—and who would have guessed that Gianni Versace's little sister would be involved in that? But she is. Donatella Versace has stripped off the gold Medusa heads, canned the scarf prints, and set about cutting a strong, feminine silhouette. "It's about a bell shape. Controlled volume. Black and white—and color to put the life in," she said. The "bell" is actually a kind of molded hourglass, emphasizing the waist and hips, but constructed in a demi-couture manner that neatly avoids constricting vulgarity. Versace used it in techno-fabric dresses, jackets, and tailored coats, and in one amazing dyed red fox that had been shaved into that shape in the midsection. Calvin Klein Women's - Fall Winter 2011 To ensure that the focus was on the fabrics, the Brazilian-born creative director zeroed in on a few uncomplicated, graphic silhouettes: above-the-knee shift dresses, baseball jackets, short A-line skirts, and coats, some of them pumped up with away-from-the-body volumes. Out first was a slate gray alpaca and cashmere jacquard topper with a deep, rich pile. A hooded shearling with a papery finish likewise looked like it could stand up to the kind of winter we've had. In fact, it was so stiff that if you took it off, it might just walk away on its own. Equally substantial, but with a more supple appeal, was a pantsuit in shiny black calf hair. On the other side of the spectrum, sleeveless dresses came whipped up from a weightless silk jacquard laser-cut into tiny frills. From a distance the surfaces seemed to be embroidered with feathers, an embellishment you're as likely to see on the Calvin runway as, oh, gold bullion. Other New York designers this week have been moving away from the American sportswear that has defined the last couple of seasons, but minimalism remains Costa's thing. The most compelling examples here: a pair of white dresses inset with geometric panels of leather at the shoulders. They may have been spare, but they weren't plain. Donna Karan: Fall 2010 Fashion Show

The 2010 Fall collection from Donna Karan presented at NY Fashion Week, celebrating her 25th birthday in the fashion business. For her fall show she focused on her original springboard elements fast-forwarded into modern silhouettes. That meant that the bodysuit was back. Her matte jersey one-piece was worn under cocoon coats in sumptuous variations -- electric blue velvet, fur-trimmed black, laser-cut lace. These materials and treatments add texture to the collection with aplomb. With looks this cool, one can only hope we'll have another 25 years of Donna.
