Alexis Mabille - Fall Winter 2011 32-year-old Alexis Mabille it holds the lure of childhood nostalgia, even though he was born too late to experience it firsthand. Some boys never forget their first fashion loves: In Mabille's case he name-checked Anjelica Huston and Nan Kempner. That duo's louche and lean sensibility is somewhat at odds with Mabille's effervescent cuteness. Squaring the two was his obvious task at hand, and a point of difference when using less-than-original source material. It was evident in the sweet little hits of color you got through pastel piping on jersey wrap skirts, languid twinsets, collarless coats, and flowing Halston-esque silk gowns, and even a turtleneck worn under a square-cut tunic dress. And, of course, the bows. One was worked into the back collar of a black smoking like a little gift. But the smartest Mabille touch here was all the little covered buttons, especially when seen in profile running down the side of a sleeve or trimming a hem. One reason this era boomerangs back into fashion so frequently is that there's something forever modern-looking about it. But that element was missing here in the overwrought look of suede-fringed scarves, heavy tunic shapes, and paisley prints. It's not that you couldn't pull out great pieces, but the big picture was probably best left as a sweet memory.

Francisco Costa's strong yet spare Fall show today made instant history of his much-maligned Spring collection. First out was a funnel-neck coat in lead gray (the non-color of the season) with sloping shoulders and gently curving seams to the knee. From there, he moved on to an oversize cashmere waffle-knit pullover, a boxy wool-tweed poncho, and a tech-y piqué hoodie that looked lacquered in its stiffness. Some jackets came with notch collars that draped down the back to form a ridgelike V. Whereas outerwear seemed to be about the negative spaces between clothes and bodies—a potentially pretentious concept that nonetheless produced results—dresses hugged every curve his models had. The trio of gowns that closed the show clung to their ankles. Easier for navigating a cocktail party was a strapless blue number with a molded bustier. Or a marble-print wool-felt sheath with face-framing collar that gave new meaning to the term "portrait neckline." This was precise and assured minimalism, and sexy to boot. Vardzia, Georgia (CNN) -- In an isolated mountain valley on the southern edge of the former Soviet Union stands a cliff honey-combed with caves. This is Vardzia -- a cave monastery built in the 12th century by Georgian kings and queens. In the 800 years since its construction, Vardzia has been destroyed by an earthquake and further damaged by invading armies. In the final days of winter, when snow coats the surrounding peaks, the caves look all but deserted. But Vardzia does have several permanent residents: seven Orthodox monks who have become the de-facto guardians of this ancient site. They live much like their ancestors did, in spartan cave dwellings on the side of the cliff. They draw their water from a spring deep within the mountain that is only accessible via a series of tunnels. The well is called "Tamar's Tears," after Queen Tamar, who completed construction of Vardzia eight centuries ago after the death of her father King Giorgi. The dedication has been getting national attention, so I am happy to have taken the time to get out and support the cause. UPDATED OCTOBER 15 2008 Im planning on building another guitar soon and this time i will document how i'm making it and i will make sure to capture as much of it as i can on video. So, sometime this winter expect a how-to sort of thing! --- DESCRIPTION: I made this guitar because ive always wanted an explorer, and i didnt want to settle for an epiphone, but i didnt want to way $1000 for a gibson either, so i made one. I wanted the guitar to sound like Billy Gibbons signature gretsch model, which is "heavily chambered," so i did the same. Sorta too bad that you cant see the inside cus thats where most of my hard work went lol. I made the guitar out of alder. I hollowed out (or Heavily chambered as i like to say) the back and glued an alder top on. The back and top are both made up of 3-4 pieces of alder, as my woodshop stock room had alot of warped pieces, and my teacher advised me to cut the wood with the grain and glue the pieces together. I used my first guitar's neck, a squier strat neck, and cut off that weird curve shape. I used a gretsch wraparound tailpiece i got off ebay and a used unidentifiable seymour duncan pickup i got at a pawn shop for $20. The one knob, a volume control, somehow got put in backwards so a counter clockwise turn will turn it up. I painted the guitar with many coats of primer, and then black spray paint, and then a silver coat on the top. The top bout of the guitar was angled that way to keep the strap from falling off because i was too cheap ...

He's got a dusty black, subtly-striped coat with an unusual tan undercoat and the biggest, prettiest jade-green eyes. The 2010 Fall collection from Donna Karan presented at NY Fashion Week, celebrating her 25th birthday in the fashion business. For her fall show she focused on her original springboard elements fast-forwarded into modern silhouettes. That meant that the bodysuit was back. Her matte jersey one-piece was worn under cocoon coats in sumptuous variations -- electric blue velvet, fur-trimmed black, laser-cut lace.
